Making WAVES Project

(Waterbased Activity - Volunteer Empowerment Scheme) Scheme update - Year Three (2009)

Carrick Leisure was awarded a major lottery award to manage, Making WAVES, a 5-year project in the Falmouth & Penryn catchment area from July 2007 until March 2012.

What is WAVES

The project involves groups of up to 12 young people aged from 10 years to 19 years taking part in a two hour pool kayaking/water safety session at Ships & Castles Leisure Pool followed by 4 sessions of kayaking, wind-surfing and dinghy sailing at South West Lakes Trust – Stithians Lake.


The initial sessions normally take place on a Tuesday evening, followed by four Saturday sessions at Stithians Lake. (Please follow the links for more information on the Ships & Castles and Stithians Lake sessions).

Project Volunteers
Another exciting facet of the project is the opportunity for local people aged 15+ to volunteer on the project. (Please see link for more information about volunteers)

Who is Eligible to Take Part
For each project year, groups are being identified through the Falmouth & Penryn Extended Services Steering Group usually from local schools and other local youth organisations.

During Year Three (2009) of the project 89 young people have participated in the project, these include the following organisations;

Making Waves : logoPenryn Sports College, Youth Cornwall, King Charles School, Falmouth School, Falmouth Primary School, Former King Charles pupils attending Falmouth & Penryn Schools, Falmouth Draceana Centre.

Project Partners
Partners in the Project include the following; South West Lakes Trust, Royal Yachting Association – On-Board Scheme, Youth Cornwall, Penryn Sports College and Falmouth School. Others partners include: Carrick Housing and Devon & Cornwall Constabulary.
